If you are already practicing as an Assessor and need to gain the NZQA unit standard 4098 you may be eligible for our Assessment or Prior learning or APL process. In short, the APL process will recognise your existing knowledge, experience and skills. If you met the criteria, you can by pass the full assessor training courses and move straight to your assessment of un it 4098.

This service is subject to an interview to establish experience and prior learning from within the adult education sector and is suitable for those who have:

already completed an Assessor Training Course in the past,

an equivalent standard from another national framework Eg, UK, Australia, South Africa

had sufficient experience and informal learning with assessment or moderation within specific organisation(s)

We will also include access to our Online Assessor Training Course resources to ensure that you are up to date with current terminologies and understand the NZ Standards Based Assessment System and how to apply your knowledge and skills to the NZ Organisation you will be assessing within.

You will be required to enrol, agree on an Evidence & Assessment Plan indicating the evidence you will be required to collect and submit and the time frame in which you will have to submit your evidence for assessment.

More about Prior Learning…

NZQA explain Prior Learning well on one of their web pages. Prior Learning

The processes of assessing Prior Learning are commonly referred to as RPL, APL, RCC and may also include cross crediting or credit transfer in a formal education arrangements.

There is a range of methods that APL, RPL & RCC can be applied but essentially your existing knowledge and/or current competencies will be assessed after your training or experience has been acknowledged as being sufficient to demonstrate that you are ready for assessment.

Your Assessor may collect a wide range of current and diverse evidence to judge against the assessment requirements.

It may be more manageable for all parties if the candidate was to complete a common assessment task or collect the evidence outlined in the approved assessment or evidence guides currently being used by the Assessor.

This process may also lead to an ‘Assessment Only’ option to demonstrate your current competency to our Assessors.

If you believe that you meet this criteria please contact us to arrange an interview.

We get asked a bit about what someone needs to have to become an Assessor for an NZQA Provider or a Workplace Assessor.

Everyone should hold NZQA unit standard 4098 as a minimum. The level of experience and industry or content related qualification that you need to hold will vary between industries and their standard setting bodies such as Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) or NZQA.

The ITOs publish their own Assessor requirementswhich are generally published on the ITOs’ website

Standard Setting Bodies (SSBs) stipulate Assessor requirements for Registered and Accredited NZQA Providers in an Accreditation Moderation Action Plan. (AMAP) These documents are available on the NZQA website and can be accesssed on the unit standard search pages. Eg Unit Standard 4098.

You will need then need to click on the link that looks like this: “Show providers, AMAP & purpose »”

So what is an AMAP?

An AMAP or Accreditation Moderation Action Plan is written by Standard Setting Bodies (SSBs) who could be NZQA or an Industry Training Organisation.

Every single unit standard comes under a AMAP and each AMAP is the responsibly of a specific SSB.

The AMAPs communicate the required criteria for Providers and ITOs to follow when teaching and assessing against specific unit standards including the specific criteria to become an Assessor for a specific industry.

Accreditation is a process which demonstrates that a tertiary education organisation is has been given ‘permission’ to deliver and assess specific standards.

This is based on evaluations of an application and quite often a visit from NZQA and or the ITO to determine if the TEO has the capability to meet all of their requirements.

The Moderation section of the document outlines the national system and how accredited Providers must participate in the system.

AMAPs are published alongside unit standards on the NQF.
